The Amharic Holy Bible is an important religious text in Ethiopia. While Christianity was established as the state religion in the 4th century, it wasn't until the last two centuries that translations of the Bible into Amharic appeared.
In 1962, a new Amharic translation from Ge'ez was printed, with the support of Emperor Haile Selassie I. The translation was carried out by a Bible Committee that the Emperor convened between 1947 and 1952. The goal of this translation was to provide a revised version of the Bible based on the original Hebrew and Greek texts. The new translation included the 66 books of the protocanon, which are considered canonical by both Protestant and Catholic Christians. The five narrow canon Ethiopian deuterocanonical books, including 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and I, II, and III Meqabyan, were published separately.
In 1986, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church published an updated version of the Amharic Holy Bible. This edition contains the deuterocanonical books as well as the 46 books of the Old Testament and the 35 books of the New Testament. While there are some minor changes or corrections to the New Testament compared to the 1962 Amharic text, the Old Testament and Deuterocanon remain unchanged from their previous publication under Haile Selassie I.
